Aviation has always garnered significant interest in Trinidad and Tobago and in 2012, The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), along with major strategic partners including Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL), the Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard (TTAG), the National Helicopter Services Ltd. (NHSL) and the Trinidad and Tobago Civil Aviation Authority (TTCAA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to make aviation training and practice a reality.
At the centre of this vision is UTT Aviation Campus at Camden, a premier facility for industry-relevant aviation training using state-of-the-art learning spaces and technology. Situated on 20 acres of land in Camden, Couva and sharing space with key stakeholders in the local aviation industry, UTT Aviation Campus at Camden is home to the largest hangar in the English-speaking Caribbean.
Over the years, UTT has remained steadfast in its plans to ensure the Aviation Campus at Camden meets the best academic and safety standards.
Today, the University is proud to have received approval to operate UTT Aviation Campus at Camden, from the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT).
Such a significant milestone allows students of UTT’s Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Aeronautical and Airworthiness Engineering, B.Sc. in Aircraft Maintenance and Management and Certificate in Aviation Technology, full access to modern, well-equipped classrooms and live aircraft for both theoretical and practical applications. This Campus houses a Boeing 727 jet aircraft donated by the TTCAA, helicopters including a Sikorsky S-76C++ donated by the NHSL, and Cessna 310 fixed-wing aircraft donated by the TTAG.
In 2018, as part of the University’s thrust into forward-thinking research, UTT established the Caribbean Centre of Expertise in Aviation Safety (CCEAS). This Centre of Expertise is a multi-disciplinary research group designed to carry out in-depth research into issues related to aviation safety and aircraft system integrity. In 2022, once UTT presents its first cohort of B.Sc. in Aeronautical and Airworthiness Engineering graduates, the University will then seek specialised accreditation from two (2) international bodies - the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS).
As The University of Trinidad and Tobago celebrates its 15th anniversary, the approval to operate UTT Aviation Campus at Camden is a significant milestone. This is further testimony of UTT’s commitment to the pursuit of excellence, contributing to the diversification of the economy of Trinidad and Tobago.
