UTT's first ever Learn to Swim programme made a splash last week, welcoming its first cohort of nine students who were interested in improving their swimming skills.  The session took place at UTT's Chaguaramas Campus pool, one of the few 50-metre pools in the country.

Conceptualised by the Sport and Recreation Unit, this seven-session programme was designed to equip students who are non-swimmers or beginner swimmers, with a greater comfort and competency for treading water, diving deeper and being versed in various swim strokes. Skills which they can apply to everyday island life and within their career path.

The session took place under the watchful eyes of the campus lifeguard, as well as swim instructor Mr Christian Awah, who also teaches the swim modules for UTT's Academy for Sport - Centre for Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport.

Special thanks to UTT's Executive Student Guild President, Mr Ajay Balkissoon, who was able to financially assist in some of the upfront costs, as well as to UTT's Chaguaramas Maintenance Unit for maintaining the pool's pristine condition.

It is hoped that the Learn to Swim programme will be a staple on the Student Academic Calendar, with this important skill and opportunity being open to any student and staff interested and able to make the commitment.
