HOW TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF RED EYE

Red eye is an infection of the eye called "conjunctivitis"

It can be caused by:

  1. Viruses - in this case, red eye can be very contagious(can be spread to other persons)
  2. Bacteria - in this case, red eye can be contagious
  3. Allergens, like pollen- in this case, red eye is not contagious
  4. Irritants, like smoke or dust - in this case, red eye is not contagious

Symptoms of red eye include:

  1. Redness, irritation, itchiness; may produce lots of tears
  2. Clear or yellow discharge that may make the eyelids stick together, especially in the morning
  3. Swelling of eyelids

Pay special attention to:

  1. Severe eye pain
  2. Change in vision
  3. Extreme sensitivity to light
  4. Marked heat & swelling of eyelids

Red eye can be easily spread by:

  1. Contact with the tears or discharges from the eyes of an infected person and then touching your own eyes.
  2. Droplets from coughing, sneezing especially in the case of viral conjunctivitis.
  3. Direct contact (usually by your hands), such as touching dirty surfaces and then rubbing your eyes.
  4. Sharing towels, medications, or make-up used by other persons that have red eye.

Treatment:

  1. There is no specific treatment for red eye
  2. Doctors may give medications depending on the cause.
  3. Redness of eyes lasts 3-5 days, and goes away on its own
  4. Seek medical attention if symptoms get worse or do not improve

Avoid contracting red eye by:

  1. Wash hands often with soap and water.
  2. If soap & water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitisers (containing at least 70% alcohol) can also be used.
  3. Do not share personal items like towels, wash rags, pillows, make-up, or eye glasses with others.
