The University of Trinidad and Tobago is proud to announce the second Senior Thesis Fashion Show, "MODE REPERTOIRE", a fashion collection by the 2013 graduating class of The Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD), UTT.
In 2008, UTT launched the first tertiary level fashion design programme in the Caribbean region. It was based on the philosophy that the development of a student's individual creativity should always be supported by a strong foundation of techniques and informed thinking. The goal of the Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD) is to educate and train aspiring designers and managers in the art and business of fashion with an eye towards developing a Caribbean fashion industry.
As UTT continues to increase the local market of Fashion Designers, these graduates have proven that their training empowers them compete on an international scale. The first graduating class has already captivated International fashion events such as Ottawa Fashion week and London Fashion Week.
Over the last four years, these 19 students explored their creativity with courses that provided the very foundation needed for designers in art and design studies; Colour & Design, Life Drawing, Art History, Critical Thinking and Computer Graphics. The building blocks were constructed with the skills needed in a typical professional atelier such as; Pattern Drafting, Draping, Fashion Drawing, Textile Design, Design Research, Composition and Conceptual Design.
Their third year engaged them with the Designer Critic project whereby a theme was assigned, spearheaded and critiqued by an outside fashion professional. Visiting critics helped them to understand design requirements and limitations of the marketplace, along with challenges faced in the business of style. Rounding off their studies during the three years of specialisation included: electives in Handbag and (sustainable) Jewelry Design, Foreign Languages, Marketing courses, and of course, Entrepreneurship. At long last, in their fourth and final year of study, each student was given free rein to explore the depths of their inspirations and imagination with the "Senior Thesis Collection," a group of six pieces entirely conceived, researched and realised by each graduating fashion design student of CAFD.
