UTT Prepares Future Petroleum Engineers for Opportunities in the Oil and Gas Industry

The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) is well poised to fill the need for highly qualified, industry-ready graduates for the emerging job market in the energy sector. With the cyclical nature of the oil and gas industry, which constitutes periods of slumps and booms, Trinidad and Tobago is set to be on the rebound. This positive turnaround is seen by the current price of oil, which is approximately three times the level experienced in early 2016. Such a promising development has signalled a change in market conditions that would direct the industry to undertake new investments in exploration and development activities across the globe. In our region, this is no exception, as there is heightened oil and gas exploration occurring in Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and other Caribbean countries which can lead to the creation of many job opportunities for petroleum engineers.

Oil and gas will continue to be a key part of the future of the global energy mix. This will result in an increased demand for qualified employees to boost this dynamic sector. In fact, according to the 2016 IHS Global Report,

"Through 2035, nearly 1.9
million job opportunities
will arise in the industry."

The University of Trinidad and Tobago offers Petroleum Engineering degrees which are internationally accredited by the Energy Institute of the UK. Additionally, UTT is the only university in the Caribbean that offers Petroleum Engineering at an undergraduate level and graduates have found jobs both locally and internationally
