The First Caribbean Moringa Symposium and Festival 2017

ABOUT Symposium and Festival

'The First Caribbean Moringa Symposium and Festival 2017', is a collaboration between The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), several farmers and Moringa Interest Groups. It will be held on Saturday June 10th, 2017 at the UTT Waterloo Research Centre, Orange Field Road.

UTT is supporting further research and development in identified indigenous crops such as the Moringa oleifera, the latest 'super food' which has been linked to numerous health and beauty benefits in its different forms by virtue of its high nutritional as well as ethno-medical values.

Although there is a general growth in the Moringa movement there is a lack of information, knowledge and expertise in many areas tied to the benefits of the plant. The Symposium is intended to develop a comprehensive information and exchange forum covering all important sub-sectors, such as food production, nutraceuticals and ethno-medicine. The event will also highlight the plant's culinary potential as well as be an opportunity for Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) to develop new production methods and access new markets.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Symposium
The Symposium will showcase scholarly and creative work including presentations on Moringa research and is intended to highlight current knowledge, expertise and best practice in many areas tied to the benefits of the plant. This segment anticipates valuable information exchange by exploring and discussing the Moringa value chain and identifying gaps to determine future market potential.

Festival
The Festival is an outreach exhibition which includes a 'Moringa Recipe Innovation Competition', a 'Moringa themed Spa and Personal Care Station', product sampling booths and food stations. This is intended to promote all levels of the use of Moringa, such as the culinary aspects, health and beauty care benefits and nutraceuticals. This segment will demonstrate the Moringa plant's potential for commercialisation.

Public and Student Tours
The Waterloo Research Centre will be the hub of activity on the day of the event. Through tours, persons will be exposed to UTT's resources such as its labs, field plots, crops etc. all of which are relevant to its programmes and other areas of agricultural research. These highly interactive tours will also serve to bring awareness to students, interest groups and the public at large.

Plant Distribution
