Diploma in Animal Health Production and Veterinary Public Health

Programme Description

The Diploma is a two-year diploma that covers the science and practice of Animal Agriculture. It pays particular attention to areas of Animal Breeds and Breeding, Reproduction, Animal Nutrition, Animal Health and Disease Management and the Animal-Environment Interaction. In addition to these areas particular attention is given to the study of Veterinary Public Health. The course has as its foundation rigorous training in practical and clinical procedures associated with animal science. Particular attention is given to providing students with the latest technology in animal science some of these will include, artificial insemination, oestrus synchronization, use of farm management software, use of ultrasonography equipment among many others. Students will also benefit from attachments to various industry organizations, these attachments will serve to provide students with experiences in real work situation.

During the first year students will be exposed to foundation courses such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Animal Biology and Communication. Students will also be introduced to the concepts involved in Animal Production Systems, Anatomy and Physiology. In the second year of the programme students will receive training in Pathology, Epidemiology, Animal Nutrition and Reproduction, Food Hygiene, Clinical Procedures, and Veterinary Public Health.
Campus residency is available and it is highly recommended that students opt for campus residency. This allows them the luxury of spending more time on the farm to practice what is been delivered both in the classroom and in the field. Additionally it is more convenient for attending practical sessions which may begin as early as 6:00 am.

To gain entry into the programme applicant should have

  • Passes in at least five (5) subjects at CXC (CSEC) General Proficiency (Grades I and/or II and from 1988 Grade III) or GCE O' Level. These must include Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject.
  • Other equivalent qualifications as UTT may consider appropriate. This may include experience in the field of study which will be highly considered.

The programme is approved for GATE funding.

Programme Mission

To produce graduates who are equipped with the latest in technological advancement in this field of study. Graduates will be able to provide technical support to animal agricultural practitioners, public and private organisations in food and agriculture and are also entrepreneurial in outlook. Graduates will be able to:

  • Function in the technical fields of animal health, production and veterinary public health
  • Progress academically to Bachelors program in Agriculture and Animal Science
  • Progress academically to programmes in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
