Process: Programmes - National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD)

Overview

Successful students in this programme are qualified for employment as process technicians or operators in industry and are also eligible for direct entry into the Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Process Engineering if they attain the required GPA.

Over a two-year period, students undertake courses in communication and life skills, mathematics, basic science, chemistry, the environment, health and safety. This is followed by topics that develop a working knowledge of plant operations and chemical engineering. Subjects covered include fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, unit operations, equipment operations and maintenance, equipment sizing and economic evaluation.

In the second year of the programme, students have two opportunities to interact with potential employers. Firstly, they can spend three months full time in industry in a Co-op or internship programme to gain hands-on experience in a working environment. Part time students may take an alternative course centered around several visits to industrial plants in lieu of the Co-op.

Secondly, on their return students are divided into groups and each is assigned to a local company to conduct a chemical engineering project. Most of the projects are located in an operating plant and may be ones to which an improvement or recommended change can be proposed.

This programme is offered at the Point Lisas and San Fernando campuses of UTT.

The full time option can be completed in two years while the part time option can be completed over a period of four years.
