My experience at UTT - Jamilah Khan

My name is Jamilah Khan and my journey with The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) began in 2007 when I enrolled in UTT’s National Engineering Technicians Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. After completing this programme,  I was offered a position in the University’s machine shop as a Laboratory Technician Assistant via the On The Job Training programme. This experience propelled my education in the field and cemented my existing knowledge. It was in this training programme that I got teaching experience as I was asked to assist lecturers in teaching Machine Shop and AutoCAD. In these three years I not only gained education, but also work experience and great social relations.

On the road to continuing my studies, I enrolled in UTT’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Design and Manufacturing Engineering programme. As I continued with my education, I also maintained the On The Job Training position as a Laboratory Technician Assistant. The experience at this level also exposed me to teaching while moving up the academic ladder. I not only obtained exposure in engineering but also how to create a business. The support of the staff truly inspires you to achieve to be the best. On completion of this programme, I reKhansed that my real true wish was to be a teacher, and now I teach Mechanical Engineering Technologies at Secondary Schools. The integration of Entrepreneurship within my courses also propelled me to think about having my own business. Today, my husband and I own a registered business, Voltorb Solutions, where we do electrical installations, fire alarm systems, individual security, camera and fire camera systems and more.

I have recently completed my Master of Science in Innovative Design and Entrepreneurship, again with the Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship at UTT. The University has always coupled teaching theory with practicals and provided lots of exposure to different teaching styles in addition to multitalented student encounters. I believe that the MME unit as well as UTT prepares us not only for the existing world of work, but in creating our own business. After all, we are an Entrepreneurial University. I believe we are being trained to see the world out of an innovative lens, with new knowledge and new experiences to build a better tomorrow starting today. Thank you to the MME Unit and UTT!
