WITH A ROBUST FOUNDATION, the greatest of structures can be built - This is the belief of Ms. Abigail Greasley, Alumna of The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Abigail also uses "a robust foundation" to describe her educational experiences at UTT, having graduated with a Diploma in Applied Process and Utilities Technology in Chemical Engineering (2010) and a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Manufacturing and Design Engineering (2017).
Currently, Abigail lives and works in Doha, Qatar as a Traffic Management and Road Safety Auditor Engineer with Parsons International Limited, on the Khalifa Avenue Project. The scope of this Project includes the construction of an extensive network of highways, connecting roads and underpasses, forming part of Qatar's planned upgrade for the hosting of one of the world's most anticipated sporting events, the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Even though she excitedly shared her experiences, Abigail admitted that there were times when she questioned her decision to work in the Middle East. Being the only female Trinidad and Tobago national on the Khalifa Avenue Project, Abigail recounted the glaring culture shock, the unshakeable feeling of loneliness and instances of gender discrimination in the work place as she was also the only female Traffic Management Inspector, on several work sites. However, with her unwavering faith in God, excellent work ethic and ability to complete the task, Abigail was able to overcome these obstacles and gain the respect and admiration of her peers. In 2016, Abigail was promoted, after only eight (8) months in her initial post of Traffic Management Inspector, to her current Engineering position.
Abigail credits UTT for providing her with a strong academic foundation, and speaks highly of UTT's 'innovative' B.A.Sc. in Manufacturing and Design Engineering programme, which nurtured her skills in management and leadership better equipping her for the global work environment. She further commented that the rigorous research agenda at The University of Trinidad and Tobago makes UTT well poised to be an influential force on the international tertiary education landscape.
In the immediate future, Abigail intends to broaden her scope and understanding of road safety and traffic management, with her ultimate goal being to return home to Trinidad and Tobago to share her knowledge and experiences with industry professionals.
