Music

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in the Performing Arts is a four-year programme of full-time study for those aspiring to a career in the Performing Arts or in Arts Education. In the Music Specialisation, students interact with some of the finest musicians in Trinidad and Tobago and learn a broad range of performing and pedagogical skills.  Graduates of this programme specialisation have embarked on careers not only as performers, composers and arrangers, but also as instrumental instructors, mainstream and special needs teachers as well as music therapists and entrepreneurs.

Studying music at APA is a transformative process, combining intensive instrumental/vocal instruction with group classes under the guidance of a diverse and inspiring faculty. Students enjoy regular performance opportunities and also take inspiration from guest artists and artists-in-residence.

The programme is taught over two semesters from September to May, culminating in an annual Production and Performance period.

APPLICATION & AUDITION

Application to the BFA in the Performing Arts with Specialisation in Music is a two-step process:

APA AUDITION

AND

UTT ONLINE APPLICATION

Applicants may register for an audition at any time during the year. Those successful at audition will be advised on how to complete the UTT application.

Minimum UTT Application Requirements:

  • Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O'Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and  from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O'Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics and English Language; OR
  • A Diploma in a relevant subject area from a recognized institution.

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the Programme.

Q: Is the Programme GATE funded?
A: Yes, the Programme is funded by GATE. Click here for further details.

Q: How do I apply?
A: Application is first made to APA for audition and interview, following which successful applicants make application to the university.

Q: Can I study part-time?
A: The BFA Music programme is only available full-time.

Q: At which campuses is the BFA Music Programme offered?
A: The programme is offered only at the UTT campus at NAPA, Port of Spain.

Q: Am I good enough to get in?
A: The best way to answer this question is to register for an audition. Beyond a certain level of proficiency, it is most important that potential students demonstrate eagerness to learn and a capacity for continued growth.
