UTT Fashion Graduate is Finalist on Mission Catwalk

Stephen Bassano is a 2017 graduate of The Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD) at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). Stephen has always been bold with his designs, experimenting with shape, technology, prints and colour. He is the only male contestant among the top three vying for $2.5 million in cash and prizes on the season finale of the reality TV show," Mission Catwalk" in Jamaica which is much like the American television programme, "Project Runway". As a student at UTT, Stephen enjoyed many memorable displays of his designs both as a static installation and on the runway. He has enriched his love for creativity by travelling to India and Thailand as an intern with the Afrofunk design label. This international experience has given Stephen a tangible interaction with the intricate applications of textile designs and colour. Stephen has a passion for learning new things and wants to continue his journey to his Master's degree in the UK in the field of Fashion Merchandising. |

Trinidad and Tobago is rich with new upcoming creatives, positioned to revolutionise the fashion industry. The Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD) at the University of Trinidad and Tobago is home to the first tertiary-level fashion design programme in the Caribbean region. The unit has been a conduit through which formal training can be achieved for aspiring designers in the local and regional fashion industry. The CAFD grew out of the philosophy that the development of a student's individual creativity should be supported by a strong foundation of techniques and informed-thinking. Students who have graduated from CAFD have become Fashion Design Entrepreneurs, Assistant Designers, Stylists, Fashion Managers and Graphic Designers, wowing the fashion industry on all levels locally, regionally and internationally. |

Ms Sandra Carr, Senior Instructor and Programme Leader at CAFD describes Stephen as a focused young man who never gave up on difficult tasks. "He was always willing to push the boundaries. He was a risk-taker and enjoyed his designing process," she said. Stephen designed his Thesis Collection entitled "Earth under Water - A World Altered by Global Warming". This is an indication that young designers are changing the narrative in T&T to make fashion more sustainable and more meaningful. The fashion industry is one of the largest pollutants of the environment. Wastewaters from the textile industry have become a great problem for all since they are disposed in rivers and creeks generating significant chemical pollution in the environment and aquatic ecosystems. By now, it is a well-known fact that the textile industry engages in large volumes of water usage and its massive production of wastewater is a global crisis. Millions of gallons of wastewater is discharged each year by mills which release heavy metals such as lead and mercury, and hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde and benzene, which is detrimental to both the environment and human health. |
| Design students at CAFD have been experimenting with natural dyes and eco-textiles to reduce the complexity of issues raised in the industry with the possibility of action and the outcomes that can lead to value-led social change. The awareness and the willingness to make a difference in the way humans perceive the environment around them is far more important than a solution to the problem. The CAFD family wishes Stephan Bassano all the best at his new ventures and will continue to be proud of him. |
