The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is a two-year Full-Time or three-year Part-Time programme requiring a minimum of 68 credits for graduation which include an Internship (Internal and Industry) worth 5 credits. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in marine science and the management of coastal and marine resources. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme reflects the University’s vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development. The programme emphasizes the connection between the marine environment and sustainable marine resource management in ensuring a stable economy with an emphasis on healthy ecosystems, sustainable tourism, and food security. Students of the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme can develop the knowledge and expertise to prepare for new and exciting career paths in marine science as well as in the practical approach to managing marine and coastal resources. Additionally, the programme makes a strong connection between the ocean and coastal communities and charts an authentic course for using research as a tool for personal and social development.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in at least five (5) CSEC subjects General Proficiency (Grades I, II and from 1998 Grade III) or passes at GCE Ordinary Levels, which must include Mathematics, English Language, and any two of the following: Geography, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics.

  Completion of a Certificate in Food Technology

  Completion of the Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE). 

Mature Student Entry

An applicant who does not satisfy the entire stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of learning, may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the Programme Teaching and Learning Committee as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the Programme (e.g., paraprofessionals). 

Additional programme requirements for the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences are:

• All applicants should have general computer skills and a familiarity with the Windows platform. Experience with MS Excel (or equivalent) and/or databases will be an asset. 
• It is recommended that students are able to swim and snorkel by the start of Year 2.

Programme Aims and Objectives

The aims of the Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering programme are to provide candidates:

• pursuing the Certificate of Competency relevant to 3rd Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) in the merchant navy with the required qualifications; education and training to be awarded the United Kingdom Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) certificate ‘STCW KNOWLEDGE UNDERSTANDING AND PROFICIENCY’, hence preparing them to become Engineer Cadets/3rd Officers in the Merchant Navy.
• with a university-based education forming the basis of study for progression to degree level studies; in particular, the BSc. Nautical Science/Maritime Operations offered by the university
• with a university-based education in level two Mechanical and Electrical Engineering forming the basis of study for progression to engineering degree level studies offered by the UTT.

Programme Learning Outcomes

On completion of the Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering programme, candidates will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding 

• recall principles of science and engineering knowledge related to the marine engineering discipline.
• recall maritime laws and regulations with regards to ensuring the safety of the seafarer and protection of the marine environment.
• identify the functions and operations of shipboard engineering equipment and machinery; marine propulsion, power and auxiliary systems present aboard vessels of the Merchant Navy.
• define the responsibilities of an Engineer 3rd Officer of the Merchant Navy as outlined in the STCW convention.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and an appropriate science-based subject.

Additionally 

• Medical fitness and eyesight requirements (for candidates wishing to pursue a career at sea)
• All candidates for and holders of STCW Certificates of Competency must hold a valid medical fitness certificate. The standards of medical fitness are currently available in MCA Marine Safety Notice MSN 1856 (M+ F) (available at www.mcga.gov.uk)
• The medical fitness certificate should be an ENGI certificate that is issued in accordance with the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK) and will be retained by the seafarer.

Admissions with Advanced Standing for OOW Applicants

• There are no opportunities for students with advanced standing with respect to this programme;

• Two (2) GCE 'A' Level passes or two (2) passes at CAPE 1 and 2 (in Chemistry, Biology or Geography, and one of the following: Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Environmental Science, or similar discipline) and Communication Studies or Equivalent

• Diploma or any other qualification from a recognized institution and experience within Environmental Science, Biology/ Marine Biology, or similar discipline

Additional requirements for the BSc. in COM are:

Mature Student Entry

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be given provisional acceptance as a mature student.   The applicant would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Professor/Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to gain full acceptance that would enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.  

For the application review process, the Programme Professor/Leader will seek the following criteria:

• Evidence of the student's ability to study at the required level
• Evidence of relevant years of experience or interest in relation to the subject

Additionally, if necessary mature students will be directed to participate in foundation courses that provide additional background in a specific area of deficiency, in order to provide the student with the time and experience to build the required academic base.

At The University of Trinidad and Tobago we offer a Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science/Maritime Operations programme, designed to build the commercial maritime acumen of its graduates. This programme was the first Maritime Bachelor's degree offered within Trinidad and Tobago and is the only accredited undergraduate maritime business degree offered in the region to date. The programme answers to the recommendations of several studies on the requirements for the development of the maritime sector.  The Vision 2030 National Development Strategy 2016-2030 has identified that quality infrastructure and transportation are key facilitators for improving productivity. Maritime Services has been identified as one of seven key national economic areas being targeted for expansion and achieving global competitiveness. Vision 2030 further states that continued efforts will be placed on improving the quality of port services, increasing private investment in the maritime sector, and integrating port operations.  It is expected that suitably qualified graduates working within the maritime sector will fuel and enhance the growth of this industry through their entrepreneurship.

The programme is targeted at persons wishing to undertake a career in the shore-based maritime industry. Maritime education is a relatively new concept in the tertiary education landscape of the region. While various forms and levels of training have existed in little pockets within the region, prior to this degree there was no undergraduate programme tailored to building the knowledge and skills for shore-based maritime administration.  
Fundamental aims of this programme are to:

• develop "industry-ready" graduates with demonstrated competencies in addressing issues and problems likely to arise in the maritime field
• fulfil the existing demand for trained professionals in the local maritime industry
• build the human resource capacity within the industry to fuel, through its graduates, the long term growth of this sector.

On successful completion of this programme, students will have obtained the knowledge, understanding, skills and values deemed critical to shore-based personnel in the maritime industry. Graduate will be able to:

• apply contemporary relevant international maritime standards in the maritime industry
• demonstrate safety management in the Maritime Industry
• apply risk management techniques within the specialized context of maritime operations
• apply knowledge of international trade, international legal compliance, and principles of marine environmental protection with specific reference to the Caribbean region
• evaluate the factors which influence maritime economics and how these apply to different trades and the various sectors of the maritime industry
• develop a general understanding of one or more of the principles of Navigation, Meteorology, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Maritime Transport and Logistics
• communicate effectively using standard maritime terms
• rationalise ethical decisions in the maritime domain in the practice of business and entrepreneurship.

The Master of Science in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management provides appropriate training and research experience to support sustainable use and rehabilitation of our coasts and oceans. This programme within the Advanced Centre for Coastal and Oceanic Research and Development (ACCORD) targets students interested in a specific career path in Coastal and Ocean Management and ensures theoretical and practical knowledge and experience that will be relevant to national, regional and international development and enterprise. Training also provides a hands-on approach to leading edge techniques and technologies and assists improvement of life skills that will support entrepreneurship.

• A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree from an approved university with a B+ average, upper second class, or an equivalent cGPA;

The Master of Science in Operational Maritime Management at The University of Trinidad and Tobago is designed to build the human resource capacity required to enhance the development of the local and regional maritime sector. The programme is currently subscribed to by persons holding middle to senior management positions in the industry. The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis.
