San José, Costa Rica| October 2023. Ten University students from Trinidad and Tobago are in Costa Rica as part of Huawei Technologies flagship global CSR program, Seeds for the Future for Central America and Caribbean countries.
Huawei, a leading provider of information and communications technologies (ICT), announced the start of the ninth edition in this region (8th edition in Trinidad and Tobago) of the program, and on October 9th, welcomed 92 outstanding students from Central America and the Caribbean to begin a technological and cultural adventure with the help of experts and leaders of the ICT industry.
From October 9th - 16th, 2023, the 92 students will learn about new technological trends, participate in classes taught by INCAE (Central American Institute of Business Administration), strengthen their soft skills and share with mentors, industry experts and regional organisations, topics that will help them in their future professional careers.
T&T students from the UWI, St. Augustine; The University of Trinidad and Tobago; and COSTAATT, joined with students from nine other countries to participate in the first in-person Seeds for the Future session held since the end of the pandemic. The program was implemented in T&T since 2016, and to date, Huawei has had used the initiative to train 100 local students.
Ravina Kanhai, a COSTAATT student studying Information Technology, said that she was excited to participate in the program. "Huawei is a well-known, multi-national organisation that can provide me with the opportunity to expand my knowledge and skillset in a global way," she said. "The Seeds for the Future program has focused on not just the new technology, but also essential traits of personal and professional growth, including leadership development, emotional awareness and critical thinking for effective decision-making. I embrace each opportunity to learn something new, meet new friends and work on projects that teach me how to make a difference in my country."
Similar sentiments were expressed by Tanveer Dhanpaul, a UTT student pursuing a Bachelor of Education, who hopes to see more practical use of technology in T&T. "I applied to the Seeds for the Future Program to expand my knowledge on various technologies and I am hoping to try to implement this new knowledge into the classrooms in Trinidad and Tobago," he said.
In the last nine years, Seeds for the Future has worked with recognised universities in the region to select the best students for this academic opportunity that will allow them to acquire technological skills while learning about new cultures and developing their creativity by carrying out the "Tech4Good" project.
Through the "Tech4Good" project, students will have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice and delve deeper into the tools that technology provides to address social or environmental problems in their countries of origin. The best projects will be selected for the global phase where the winning group will be able to obtain $100,0000 USD to carry out their project.
Part of Huawei's efforts is also to promote female participation; reducing the gender gap has been a priority in Huawei in recent years. The first years of the program in Central America and the Caribbean, a percentage of 15% of female participation was managed, this year the company achieved 44% female inclusion from the 10 countries, with the future goal of achieving 50% to promote their professional development and digital skills training.
Seeds for the Future has been carried out globally for 15 consecutive years since its first launch in 2008 in Thailand, and more than 15,000 students from more than 500 universities in 137 countries and regions around the world have participated in the program. In local terms, the program has been implemented since 2015 in the region of Central America and the Caribbean, reaching more than 400 students from 10 countries in the region.
"We believe that we can contribute greatly to local communities by working hand by hand with our clients, partners and stakeholders since we all share the same vision of wanting to promote the digital transformation of our region," said Daniel Ding, VP of Huawei Central America and the Caribbean. "To achieve this, the most important thing is to invest in talent. Training future generations with technical skills and business tools is the most important step we have identified to build a robust technological ecosystem."
