As part of EXPO week, APA Acting Studio presents The Wine of Astonishment by UTT Master Artist in Residence Earl Lovelace, a play adapted from his well-known novel of the same name. Telling the story of Bonasse, a small village community of Spiritual Baptists in rural Trinidad, the play traces the villagers’ path from the 1917 colonial ordinance banning its religious customs to the 1951 repeal, the result of relentless effort on the part of the community’s leadership.
Lovelace asks how, after such struggle for survival, the village could still produce two sons who ultimately brutalise the very society that nurtured them - one a stick fighter and the other a successful school teacher and politician. Lovelace’s complete theatre, embracing lyricism and rhythm, dance and sound is based on Spiritual Baptist worship and will offer a potent vehicle for APA’s acting students to discover a key part of their cultural heritage.
