The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) has recently taken the covers off a highly anticipated Game Art specialization within its BFA in Digital Media Arts programme. This expands upon an offering that included Animation and Music Technology at inception, with Film and Television slated to follow in the coming years.

Game Art lead instructor Caiphus Moore has over twenty years of experience in the gaming industry, the last eight of which were spent with global game giant Electronic Arts (EA).  He recently placed third in the Marmoset Choice Award, an international challenge which fielded some 1400 entries from over 100 countries.  Read more about it here.

„…more like a simulated art studio than a classroom…a fast-paced learning environment…“

For Caiphus, who has spent most of his life in the United States, taking up the post of Senior Instructor of Digital Media Arts at APA in January of 2019 marked a return to his Trinidadian roots. Now that the Game Art specialization at APA has been launched, he is excited to pass on to his students the wealth of knowledge and experience he has acquired working at the top of the international gaming industry:

“The Game Art curriculum functions more like a simulated art studio than a classroom. Enrolees can expect a fast-paced learning environment with in-depth studies and a focus on art fundamentals to create high quality, real-time gaming assets. Students won’t only learn how to develop an industry ready portfolio, they will be taught the soft skills that support Game Art: punctuality, problem solving, independent study and communication.”

UTT‘s BFA in Digital Media Arts is a unique programme in the Caribbean region from which  graduates will emerge with an edge in the post-COVID-19 job market.  Data shows that animation and game services were among the few areas of global employment that have remained stable, transitioning seamlessly to socially distanced models of employment.  Studios around the world successfully maintained product development via a home-based workforce, with only management continuing to occupy the traditional office environment.

With support from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Ministry of Planning‘s Global Services Project, UTT will soon be launching an Animation Outsourcing Hub at its Signature Campus in Tamana. The aim is to create a workforce which can share projects, support regional satellite studios and impart basic animation and digital media knowledge to teachers in support of the CXC curriculum.
