The Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering programme seeks to provide candidates with the required qualifications and training to be awarded the UK Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) certificate ‘STCW UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDEGE’. Following the completion of additional STCW short courses, sea training, simulator training and passing the International Association of Maritime Institutions (IAMI) written examinations and the MCA oral examination, the candidate will be eligible to the award of a first Certificate of Competency as an Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) in the merchant navy.

The programme also intends to provide candidates with a university based education leading to the award of a Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering. This will form the basis of study for progression to degree level studies; in particular, the BSc. Nautical Science/Maritime Operations offered by the university.

Entry Requirements:

  • Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and an appropriate science-based subject.

Additionally 

  • Medical fitness and eyesight requirements (for candidates wishing to pursue a career at sea)
  • All candidates for and holders of STCW Certificates of Competency must hold a valid medical fitness certificate. The standards of medical fitness are currently available in MCA Marine Safety Notice MSN 1856 (M+ F) (available at www.mcga.gov.uk)
  • The medical fitness certificate should be an ENGI certificate that is issued in accordance with the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK) and will be retained by the seafarer.

Admissions with Advanced Standing for OOW Applicants

  • There are no opportunities for students with advanced standing with respect to this programme; 

Mature Student Entry:

Mature students with appropriate industrial experience are to be particularly encouraged to apply for admission to the programme. It is envisaged that many mature students will already have sea going experience and support level qualifications and will be keen to obtain an internally recognized certificate of competence at the operational level. Mature students not in possession of the prerequisite qualifications may be accepted to the programme at the discretion of the Programme Leader. 

 

Career Opportunities:

  • On completion of the Diploma programme, candidates satisfying the academic standard acceptable by the MCA will be eligible to advance to the Professional Officer of the Watch (Engineer) Programme comprising of the sea training phase, MCA Short course and MCA examinations. This programme is offered by the University of Trinidad and Tobago at the Chaguaramas Campus.
  • On completion of the sea training phase, MCA Short course and MCA examinations cadets will be awarded the STCW95 Reg. III/1 Engineer Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency which will allow them to carry out duties at the rank of 3rd Engineer officers on vessels of the Merchant Navy.
  • Professional experience is highly recognised in the Maritime Industry and with sufficient experience, further study and relevant examinations 3rd officers can progress to higher ranks of Engineer officers (2nd and Chief) in the Merchant Navy leading to a meaningful, rewarding and respected career as a seafarer.
