She attained her Bachelor of Science degree from The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, with honours in Chemistry/Analytical Chemistry in 1995, then in 2010 graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry/Analytical Environmental Chemistry with High Commendation. Her graduate research was conducted in the area of environmental assessment and treatment of heavy metal pollution (particularly lead) on designated sites in Trinidad. This study investigated the use of Portland cements and asphalt in the treatment of lead-contaminated soils and battery waste, resulting in several cost-effective mix designs.
She started her career in 2001 at Baroid Trinidad Services, where she worked as a Technical Professional/Laboratory Manager. Here she was responsible for all laboratories on land and offshore (drilling fluids). In addition, she was instrumental in the implementation of laboratory quality system (ISO 9001:2000 Certification); training of drilling fluids engineers and laboratory technicians; research and development of new testing protocols; and the development and implementation of a drilling fluids training course for The University of Trinidad and Tobago.
In 2007, she joined The University of Trinidad and Tobago as a Research Associate under the Petroleum Unit. At UTT she developed, implemented and coordinated the Petroleum Laboratories at the O'Meara Campus. She was responsible for the development of all lab manuals for the Diploma, B.A.Sc. and M.Sc. Petroleum Programmes. She also supported other teaching courses via tutorials, laboratory demonstrations, supervising undergraduate and graduate research projects and lecturing. Currently, she is a member of the UTT HSE committee and was instrumental in setting up a laboratory audit programme at UTT and developing the UTT Laboratory Safety Manual. She is responsible for coordinating and teaching all Petroleum Labs, supervising 3rd year B.A.Sc. projects, as well as for ensuring that licenses software suites are available for the Petroleum Unit. Dr. Ali has over ten (10) years teaching and research experience, with scientific work published both locally and internationally. Her primary research focus is in the area of environmental studies and total fluids management in drilling.
