The University of Trinidad and Tobago's Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) Contemporary Jazz Ensemble under the leadership of Anthony Woodroffe, Assistant Professor, APA went to Presentation College, San Fernando on Thursday 1 May, 2025.
The Ensemble gave an interactive musical showcase designed to raise awareness of the countless opportunities available within the performing arts sector and show a pathway to access them through a variety of activities.
Students were allowed to sit on a judge's panel, learn a new Latin rhythm, and even build the band one musician at a time. Not only did they learn about APA's Performing Arts degree, but they departed with large smiles, new friendships, and a burning passion for music that lit up their eyes.
"We had a great time interacting with them—hearing their thoughts, answering their questions, and watching them overcome their fears as they participated in each interactive activity." said Jamila Atwell, who coordinated the event as part of her final Teaching Artist Capstone project under the mentorship of Caitlyn Kamminga, Associate Professor of Music. "The boys were a little shy at first, but by the end of the session, they were playing with us and having a blast."
Both Presentation College and APA faculty expressed a desire to build on this new relationship and have more curated performances in the near future.
APA is grateful to Massy Limited for supporting this and other schools visits.
