Dr. Deanesh Ramsewak is an accomplished geospatial scientist, educator, and academic with over 20 years of experience applying Earth Observation, GIS, and remote sensing technologies to coastal and marine systems. His work focuses on coastal and marine monitoring including mangroves, coral reefs, and sargassum inundation as well as the development of advanced geospatial solutions, including digital twins, to support environmental management, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable development.

Dr Ramsewak currently serves as Assistant Professor in Practice and Discipline Leader for the BSc in Coastal and Ocean Management at the Centre for Maritime and Ocean Studies, where he provides strategic leadership in curriculum development, research direction, and programme delivery. His teaching and supervision are grounded in applied, problem-based learning, and he has mentored a wide cohort of MSc, MPhil, and PhD students in marine and environmental sciences.

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Ramsewak spent nearly a decade leading research at the Remote Sensing Laboratory of the Institute of Marine Affairs, managing national-level projects in coastal mapping, satellite data applications, and environmental monitoring. This foundation continues to inform his applied research and consultancy, which align closely with national and regional development priorities.

Dr. Ramsewak has led and contributed to numerous multidisciplinary projects across Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean, including marine spatial planning, flood assessment, and coastal habitat mapping. His international collaborations include serving as a Co-Investigator on a NASA ROSES-funded project applying UAS technologies for coral reef and seagrass mapping, alongside multiple government and donor-funded initiatives. At the global level, he contributes to ocean science and policy through his roles on the UN Ocean Decade Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) Steering Committee and the OceanObs’29 Programme Committee. In 2026, Dr. Ramsewak was appointed to the Cartagena Convention COP18 - Sargassum Working Group, contributing to regional efforts to address Sargassum-related challenges across the Wider Caribbean. He also serves in senior editorial roles for Frontiers in Marine Science and Frontiers in Remote Sensing.

Dr. Ramsewak’s contributions have been recognised through multiple awards for excellence in teaching and research, and in 2025, his work was featured in the United Nations UN80 Project, recognising impactful contributions from 193 countries. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology, and remains actively engaged in regional and international initiatives advancing geospatial innovation, ocean monitoring, and sustainable development.
