The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is a two-year Full-Time or three-year Part-Time programme requiring a minimum of 68 credits for graduation which include an Internship (Internal and Industry) worth 5 credits. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in marine science and the management of coastal and marine resources. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme reflects the University’s vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development. The programme emphasizes the connection between the marine environment and sustainable marine resource management in ensuring a stable economy with an emphasis on healthy ecosystems, sustainable tourism, and food security. Students of the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme can develop the knowledge and expertise to prepare for new and exciting career paths in marine science as well as in the practical approach to managing marine and coastal resources. Additionally, the programme makes a strong connection between the ocean and coastal communities and charts an authentic course for using research as a tool for personal and social development.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in at least five (5) CSEC subjects General Proficiency (Grades I, II and from 1998 Grade III) or passes at GCE Ordinary Levels, which must include Mathematics, English Language, and any two of the following: Geography, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics.

  Completion of a Certificate in Food Technology
  
  OR
  
  Completion of the Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE). 

Mature Student Entry

An applicant who does not satisfy the entire stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of learning, may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the Programme Teaching and Learning Committee as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the Programme (e.g., paraprofessionals). 

Additional programme requirements for the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences are:

• All applicants should have general computer skills and a familiarity with the Windows platform. Experience with MS Excel (or equivalent) and/or databases will be an asset. 
• It is recommended that students are able to swim and snorkel by the start of Year 2.

The BSc in COM programme reflects the University’s vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development and aims to mirror world standards by ensuring students receive continuous quality education. The programme is built to be one of the best in the world. The programme emphasizes the connection between the marine environment and sustainable marine resource management to ensure a stable economy with an emphasis on healthy ecosystems, sustainable tourism and food security.

Entry Requirements:

• Two (2) GCE 'A' Level passes or two (2) passes at CAPE 1 and 2 (in Chemistry, Biology or Geography, and one of the following: Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Environmental Science, or similar discipline) and Communication Studies or Equivalent

   OR

• Diploma or any other qualification from a recognized institution and experience within Environmental Science, Biology/ Marine Biology, or similar discipline

Mature Student Entry

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be given provisional acceptance as a mature student.   The applicant would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Professor/Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to gain full acceptance that would enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.  

For the application review process, the Programme Professor/Leader will seek the following criteria:

• Evidence of the student's ability to study at the required level
• Evidence of relevant years of experience or interest in relation to the subject

Additionally, if necessary mature students will be directed to participate in foundation courses that provide additional background in a specific area of deficiency, in order to provide the student with the time and experience to build the required academic base.

The Master of Science in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management provides appropriate training and research experience to support sustainable use and rehabilitation of our coasts and oceans. This programme within the Advanced Centre for Coastal and Oceanic Research and Development (ACCORD) targets students interested in a specific career path in Coastal and Ocean Management and ensures theoretical and practical knowledge and experience that will be relevant to national, regional and international development and enterprise. Training also provides a hands-on approach to leading edge techniques and technologies and assists improvement of life skills that will support entrepreneurship.

Entry Requirements:

• A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree from an approved university with a B+ average, upper second class, or an equivalent cGPA;
• A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a lower B+ average but with compensating experience and/or qualifications. 
• General computer skills. Experience with MS Excel (or equivalent) and/or databases are advantageous.
• Other professional qualifications and experience deemed suitable by the Board for Postgraduate Studies, Research and Development.
• Note:  Applicants seeking mature entry will be required to submit an essay submission with a count between fifteen hundred (1500) to two thousand (2000) on, "Why do you want to do a Master of Science in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management programme?"

The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis. 

Taught courses are offered online. Meetings relating to supervisor directed courses are held using communication applications such as Zoom or MS Teams. Special arrangements may be made for laboratory and personal interaction, should the need arise, in keeping with existing health protocols.

• Persons holding a Taught Master’s Degree from an approved university with a B average or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons holding a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with a B+ average, or Upper Second-Class Honors or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons with other professional qualifications and industrial or business experience deemed to be suitable by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are awarded on the basis of a Dissertation based on original research, together with successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and four (4) seminars. The written Dissertation report must provide documentation of a significant original contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of study and an oral defence of the Dissertation.
