The new Bachelor of Science in Coastal and Ocean Management (COM) programme emphasizes the value of research to students’ achievement of academic excellence as well as its contribution to the development of marine resource management strategies and policy. The BSc in COM programme reflects the University’s vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development and aims to mirror world standards by ensuring students receive continuous quality education. The programme is built to be one of the best in the world. The programme emphasizes the connection between the marine environment and sustainable marine resource management to ensure a stable economy with an emphasis on healthy ecosystems, sustainable tourism and food security.

Entry Requirements:

Two (2) GCE 'A' Level passes or two (2) passes at CAPE 1 and 2 (in Chemistry, Biology or Geography, and one of the following: Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Environmental Science, or similar discipline) and Communication Studies or Equivalent
OR

Diploma or any other qualification from a recognized institution and experience within Environmental Science, Biology/ Marine Biology, or similar discipline
Additional requirements for the BSc. in COM are:

All applicants should have general computer skills and a familiarity with a Windows platform. Experience with MS Excel (or equivalent) and/or databases are advantageous.

Ability to swim and snorkel by the start of Year 2.
Mature Student Entry
An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be given provisional acceptance as a mature student. The applicant would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Professor/Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to gain full acceptance that would enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.
For the application review process, the Programme Professor/Leader will seek the following criteria:

Evidence of the student's ability to study at the required level

Evidence of relevant years of experience or interest in relation to the subject
Additionally, if necessary mature students will be directed to participate in foundation courses that provide additional background in a specific area of deficiency, in order to provide the student with the time and experience to build the required academic base.
