The Trinidad and Tobago Paralympic Committee (TTPC) hosted the first of five (5) workshops at The University of Trinidad and Tobago's UTT San Fernando Campus on July 12th and 13th, 2024. The workshop aimed to recruit coaches, athletes, officials, and supporters while increasing awareness for parasports in Trinidad and Tobago.
Facilitators of the initiative included UTT's Micky Ruben, the only World Para Athletics (WPA) National Physical Impairment Classifier and WPA National Technical Official for track and field in Trinidad and Tobago. He is also the only WPA International Intellectual Impairment Classifier in the Caribbean.
Other facilitators included Mark St. Louis, a UTT Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Kinesiology programme student, and Francis Haynes of the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association. Notable guests present were Mr Patrice Charles, Assistant Director, Physical Education and Sport at the Ministry of Sport and Community Development (MSCD), Mr Carlos Green, Trinidad and Tobago Paralympian, Mr Sudhir Ramessar, President of the TTPC, and Mr Usayd Casewit of the International Paralympic Committee.
According to Casewit, the project is a great example of investments in parasports to help catalyse social inclusion, identify and evaluate potential coaching and athletic talent, and erode stigmas around disabilities in Trinidad and Tobago.
The workshop was focused on Paralympic sports such as goalball, track and field, and boccia.
