David Mahabir pursued the Master of Science in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) to strengthen both his professional expertise and his passion for environmental conservation.
As a Wildlife Biologist within the Forestry Division, David plays a vital role in managing and protecting ecosystems and Ramsar Sites across Trinidad and Tobago. His work focuses on wetlands, mangroves, and coastal habitats ecosystems that are critical to supporting biodiversity and maintaining environmental balance.
Building Knowledge Through Marine Science
UTT’s Marine Sciences programme provided David with the opportunity to deepen his academic foundation while gaining specialised training in coastal and ocean management. Through its interdisciplinary approach integrating marine ecology, environmental management, and policy, he developed the skills needed to support national conservation efforts and contribute to evidence-based decision-making. Most importantly, David learned to approach environmental challenges from an integrated perspective, combining science, policy, and sustainable management practices.
Field Experience That Made an Impact
One of the most memorable highlights of David’s studies was participating in a population survey of the West Indian Manatee in the Nariva Swamp, one of the country’s most significant wetland ecosystems.
Using side-scan sonar technology, the research team surveyed waterways within the swamp, enabling them to detect and monitor manatees in conditions where visibility is often limited by turbid water and dense vegetation. This innovative approach allowed for accurate data collection while minimising disturbance to the animals’ natural habitat.
A Foundation for Professional Growth
The programme provided David with a strong interdisciplinary foundation that continues to support his career. His training in integrated resource management, environmental assessment, and research has enhanced his effectiveness as a Wildlife Biologist and strengthened his contributions to environmental management initiatives across the country.
Reflecting on his experience, David encourages aspiring students to explore the field of marine science and conservation:
“Because of UTT Marine Sciences, I am now able to float above my challenges and navigate toward my professional goals.”
