Former UTT Patriots Volleyball student-athlete and team captain, Asia 'Azi' Joseph, recently graduated from Florida International University (FIU) with a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Teaching and Learning with a specialisation in Kinesiology.

Joseph broke new ground, becoming the first Ph.D. graduate of the programme from the Department of Teaching and Learning at FIU, following the successful defence of her doctoral dissertation on March 13, 2026.

Her defence comprised three (3) interrelated studies, the first of which provided a thorough narrative review examining how psychophysiological regulation, emotional dynamics, and performance outcomes are intricately connected across a range of contexts, from general exercise behaviour to elite athletic competition. The second study offered an applied analysis of elite cricket players, exploring how individual psychophysiological profiles influence accuracy in pace-bowling tasks. The third combined psychophysiological indicators (such as heart rate variability, mood states, and quality), GPS-based performance metrics, and subjective evaluations of stress and exertion to predict on-court performance in collegiate basketball athletes.

According to Dr Marcelo Bigliassi, Director, Kinesiology Graduate Program (FIU), "Joseph's work focused on psychophysiological profiles in professional and elite athletes, examining how physiological and psychological systems interact to shape performance and adaptation in high-level sport." He also praised her dedication to her work, stating that she approached every stage of the process with persistence, curiosity, and a strong commitment to high-quality research.

Along her journey, Joseph was a part of three (3) publications related to her study. One publication was issued in the Performance Enhancement & Health Journal in 2025. The article titled 'Psychophysiological Profiling of Elite Cricket Athletes' was co-authored along with Michael Waller, Trey Watson, Tiberio Garza, and Marcelo Bigliassi.

Joseph is also a contributing author to the published book Sport and Exercise Psychophysiology (2025), edited by Marcelo Bigliassi and Edson Filho. She is acknowledged for her contributions in chapter sixteen titled "Emotions in Motion: Examining the Effects of Psychophysiological States on Exercise Behaviour and Athletic Performance".

Another article, titled 'Modeling Performance in Basketball with Dense Neural Networks and Multimodal Biometric Data', is currently under review in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

The former national player was also recognised by FIU's College of Arts, Sciences & Education for her excellence, superior performance and accomplishments, having received the "Outstanding Academic Achievement-Graduate" award; another testament to her faith, discipline and perseverance.

Her main goal is to bridge the gap between physiology and psychology, translating how these factors contribute to and influence athletic performance.

UTT congratulates Dr Asia Joseph on her achievement and wishes her all the best in her future career endeavours.
