Student Athletes Excel Academically while Competing Regionally and Internationally
The University of Trinidad and Tobago's (UTT) Sport and Recreation Unit, established in August 2007, continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the nation's sporting landscape. Through a strategic integration of sport science, elite coaching, academic support and national partnerships, UTT has positioned itself as a key driver of sport development in Trinidad and Tobago.
At the core of UTT's model is a holistic approach to student-athlete development, where academic excellence and athletic performance go hand in hand. Each year, the University prepares hundreds of student-athletes to compete at national and international levels. Between 2022 and 2025, 57 student-athletes maintained a CGPA of 3.0 or higher while actively competing, while approximately 30 graduates transitioned into professional careers, reflecting the strength of UTT's dual-development model.
The true impact of the programme is best illustrated through the success of its students. Table tennis standout Curtis Humphreys continues to represent Trinidad and Tobago internationally, while also contributing to sport administration as a former First Vice-President of the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association (2023-2025) and now as the operator of his own academy. Similarly, former student-athlete Matthew Mootra has transitioned into a professional career as an Aviation Technician with Caribbean Airlines, demonstrating how UTT prepares graduates for success both on and off the field.
To date, UTT has produced over 310 national athletes who have competed in regional and international competitions. The university's football teams have proudly represented Trinidad and Tobago at the FISU America Football Qualifiers in Mexico (2022), Uruguay (2024), and Peru (2026), showcasing UTT's growing presence on the international stage.
UTT athletes have also earned selection to major global and regional competitions, including the World University Games, FISU America Games, NACAC Championships and the Commonwealth Games, across disciplines such as athletics, football, netball, table tennis and volleyball. Among the student achievements are Umar Sandy's gold medal in discus at the FISU America Games (2024) and Tafari Waldron's silver medal at the UWI International Half Marathon (2025).
Beyond athlete development, UTT continues to influence the wider sporting ecosystem through its cadre of coaches and technical experts, many of whom serve in key roles at the national, regional and international levels. These include positions as national team coaches, sport advisors, strength and conditioning specialists, physiotherapists and sport administrators, contributing to the advancement of sport across Trinidad and Tobago and beyond.
Through the SUCCESS Unit (Students, University, Campus, Community, Education and Sport Services), UTT also promotes national wellness and community engagement initiatives that encourage active and healthy lifestyles, and broaden participation in sport.
Strategic partnerships remain central to UTT's continued growth. Collaborations with organisations such as the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee, the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation, the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association and the Trinidad and Tobago Table Tennis Association provide student-athletes with access to advanced training, sport science expertise and structured development pathways.
Looking ahead, UTT is committed to becoming a globally recognised institution for sport development through the continued production of high-performance athletes capable of excelling on the international stage. The University will further expand its partnerships with global sporting institutions to enhance athlete development, coaching excellence, research and international competition exposure.
Commenting on the progress of his unit, Mr Ian Pritchard, Senior Manager, Sport and Recreation stated, "We are uniquely positioned to develop the next generation of elite athletes in Trinidad and Tobago because we combine world-class facilities, expert coaching, and a holistic approach to athlete development. Our programmes focus on the development of physical skills and also cultivate discipline, resilience, and strategic thinking - qualities that create champions. We recognise that the difference between potential and achievement lies in dedication, innovation, and the unwavering support we provide to our athletes".
