From UTT to Alaska: Timmy Moolchan's Journey to the Bering Sea

Timmy Moolchan, born in San Juan, Trinidad and now residing in the United States, always aspired to study Marine Biology. As a graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Coastal and Ocean Sciences at UTT, his goal was to demonstrate that graduates from Trinidad and Tobago are more than capable of excelling internationally and pursuing their dreams at the highest level.

Immediately after completing the programme, Timmy secured a position as a U.S. government contractor with NOAA Fisheries in the Pacific Northwest, working as a Fisheries Observer in the Bering Sea, Alaska. This role placed him aboard large U.S. factory trawling vessels, some up to 180 feet long with crews of nearly 200, where they spent months at sea identifying species, conducting genetic sampling, and collecting fisheries data. The experience also allowed him to meet people from around the world, travel along the Pacific Coast, and gain valuable expertise.

After two years working in the Pacific, Timmy transitioned to NOAA's Atlantic Fisheries, focusing on scallop surveys and continuing to work in fisheries observation. Today, he is based in Southwest Florida as an Environmental Consultant / Compliance Manager, where he conducts environmental impact inspections, prepares and verify permits, and advises clients on environmental compliance.

Reflecting on his journey, he credits UTT's Marine Sciences programme for providing a strong academic foundation and resilience needed to succeed. The programme not only expanded his knowledge but also prepared him for the mental and physical challenges of the field. Timmy remains extremely proud to be a graduate of The University of Trinidad and Tobago.
