UTT Graduates are helping shape the Future of Aviation through Innovation, Engineering and Global Expertise

From designing aviation infrastructure at some of the busiest airports in the United States to advancing engineering innovation and manufacturing systems, graduates of The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) are demonstrating how Caribbean talent can compete and excel on the global stage.

The journeys of Joshua Sattan and Marvin M. Baptiste reflect the strength of UTT's aviation programmes and the university's commitment to producing graduates equipped with the technical expertise, analytical skills and innovative mindset required in today's rapidly evolving aviation industry.

From UTT Classrooms to Major International Airports

For Joshua Sattan, the path to international aviation consultancy began in Trinidad at UTT's Aviation Campus at Camden. Enrolling in UTT's Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Aircraft Maintenance and Management in 2016, Sattan was part of the programme's second cohort and played an active role in helping prepare the aviation campus during its developmental stages.

The programme combined practical aircraft maintenance training with airline operations and management studies, providing students with a strong foundation in both technical and leadership competencies.

That experience paved the way for Sattan to pursue a Master's Degree in Airport Development and Management at the Florida Institute of Technology in the United States.

Today, he serves as an Aviation Planner/Consultant with WSP, a global infrastructure consulting firm, contributing to projects at major international airports including John F. Kennedy International Airport, Philadelphia International Airport, and Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

His work spans large-scale airport redevelopment initiatives, infrastructure planning and operational improvements which support the future growth of global aviation systems.

Reflecting on his journey, Sattan encourages aspiring professionals to remain adaptable and focused. "Network, stay focused, and pursue what you are passionate about. You don't have to be the most qualified, being well-rounded and driven can open doors."

Innovation and Engineering Beyond Borders

For Marvin M. Baptiste, a Grenadian student who chose The University of Trinidad and Tobago to pursue his aviation ambitions, engineering became an unexpected but transformative pathway.

Originally aspiring to become a pilot, Baptiste discovered a passion for engineering while working in Ground Operations at American Airlines. Observing aircraft engineers troubleshoot issues sparked a deeper curiosity about the systems and technologies that keep aviation moving.

In 2019, he enrolled in UTT's B.Sc. Aeronautical and Airworthiness Engineering programme, where he developed advanced technical and analytical skills in areas including engineering systems, CAD design and project management.

A defining moment during his studies came through a final-year project in which his team successfully designed and built an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), showcasing the programme's emphasis on innovation, applied research and emerging aviation technologies.

Following graduation in 2023, Baptiste pursued a Master's degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology at Western Illinois University, completing the programme in December 2024.

He now works as a Continuous Improvement Engineer at Troax America, where he plays a leading role in a major facility relocation project from Illinois to Tennessee. His responsibilities include optimising production processes, coordinating equipment transitions and supporting operational efficiency.
