Nice Us Geriatric: Providing Essential Care in the Silver Economy

Jul 7, 2026 | Views:121  | Print Version

Nice Us Geriatric started out of a promise to an elderly patient. A promise to do better. I worked as a Registered Nurse at a public hospital and had to care for a patient admitted with severe signs of negligent abuse. His relatives attempted to care for him, however, his overall health deteriorated somewhat quickly. I realised the lack of knowledge and professionalism in home care was the root cause of this issue. As a result, Nice Us Geriatric was conceptualised, and remains committed to delivering professional elder care through home care services and vocational training. For our Home Care Service, we employ a team of Registered Nurses and certified caregivers to give families peace of mind.

Our mission over the next six to twelve months will see us visit Canada, exporting workers to provide home care services using our N.I.C.E. core values - Nice/pleasant, Integrity, Competence, Excellence, and expanding our vocational training in elder care across Trinidad and Tobago.

I must state, there would be no Nice Us Geriatric without UTT's Business Incubator, uStart as it is the foundation to our business success. The team provided access to expert advisors, opportunity to seed capital funding in the form of an interest free loan, and life changing one year mentorship, which are the main reasons we are now celebrating our tenth anniversary. It is my belief that uStart is critical for any young entrepreneur.

My proudest moment as a business owner would be a toss-up between the time my company was selected to be a member of the US Embassy's Academy for Women Entrepreneurs' first cohort in Trinidad and Tobago 2021, or when I was chosen from over six hundred applicants across Latin America and the Caribbean, to be one of forty members of the Silver Region Accelerator Programme hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank.

My advice to young entrepreneurs would be to never stop learning and never stop looking for opportunities. Align your business activities with incubators as they are key to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises success. Be confident enough to pitch to everyone as they can become ambassadors for your business. I would also encourage you to stay focused, disciplined and patient, understanding that until you are fluent in financial statements, you are running your business blindfolded.
