This year, I had the opportunity to assist in the preparation, hanging, programming and running of the lighting for the New Play Festival 2017 presented at the Big Black Box.  I was able to work with members and producers of the Trinidad Theater Workshop (TTW), former UTT students, current UTT Lecturers and members of the Arts community.  This year, three (3) new plays were workshopped and presented over the course of two weekends.  What made this a unique experience is that instead of being presented in the cramped former TTW space, the yard of the Big Black Box was transformed into the playing space.

Presenting the plays under the cover of the night sky rather than the cover of the stage’s roof, not only created a different viewing experience for the audience but also allowed for the stage and lighting not to be as confined.  Of course, we were subject to the outdoor neighbourhood noise and the occasional nocturnal bat.  By participating and supporting events such as these, not only do I get the opportunity to continue to practice my craft but also to learn new information and improve my skills.  Also, I hope that by participating we can contribute towards an improved theatrical community and production projects in which APA students can take part.
