This course is intended for candidates for Efficient Deck Hand Certificate (Qualifying examination for Able Seafarer Deck) Regulation II/5 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments).
Aim
The aim of this two week support level training course is to prepare the trainee with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to fulfil the role as an Able Seafarer Deck (STCW Regulation II/5) on board ship.
Entry requirements
Deck cadet route
Candidates must be following the UTT MCA approved Deck Cadet training programme or a similar programme approved by the MCA and must satisfy the following:
MARD1015 Seamanship: Efficient Deck Hand – PART I
MARD2020 Seamanship: Efficient Deck Hand – PART II (or similar courses approved by the MCA)
Alternative route – 1 (Yachting)
In accordance with the requirements specified in MIN 473 (M) (MCA) the following certification and experience will permit entry on to the EDH course and examination:

Royal Yachting Association (RYA) or International Yacht Training (IYT) certificates will be accepted. 2 The Shore-based Course is not required if you hold a Yachtmaster Offshore issued before 31 July 2003.
Note: before an EDH certificate can be issued, a minimum of 6 months sea service in vessels of more than 15m is required. Sea service in category C and D waters will be accepted at full rate (applies to UK candidates).
Alternative route – 2 (Able Seafarer Deck certification, Regulation II/5)
The STCW Regulation II/5 Able Seafarer Deck will replace the current AB Certificate of Competency (CoC) as contained in the 'Merchant Shipping (Certificate of Competency as A.B.) Regulations 1970 (UK).
To gain an Able Seafarer Deck Certificate of Proficiency Regulation II/5 the candidate must:
(a) be not be less than 18 years of age;
(b) have successfully completed the basic training required by STCW Code A-VI/1-4
(c) have gained 18 months sea service in the deck department whilst holding a NWR certificate Regulation II/4 or whilst holding an EDH certificate; Note: the 18 months sea service requirement may be reduced to 12 months if the candidate is on an approved training programme.
(d) hold an EDH certificate;
(e) hold an MCA approved Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat other than fast rescue boats certificate (CPSC&RB), and
(f) hold an ENG 1 or MCA accepted equivalent.
To be eligible for entry on to the EDH course and examination it follows that criteria a, b, c and e must be satisfied.
