Aim
This course is intended for candidates who will undertake communication duties utilising VHF equipment on board. Every seafarer who is designated to perform such duties on any seagoing ship irrespective of size shall receive approved training in use of VHF equipment. This GMDSS qualification is designed for mariners who will be operating within GMDSS Area A1 (VHF range) only (the GOC is required for those who will be operating Outside A1 areas).
The aim of this three day training course is to prepare the seafarer employed or engaged in capacity to use VHF on ships, during emergency or routine communication. Especially, with respect to necessary knowledge, understanding and proficiency to protect and maintain their own and others safety at sea in accordance with international regulations. Candidate will be able to operate the VHF radio and associated equipment required for GMDSS Sea area A 1. It is vital for coastal safety that those equipped with VHF are able:
- To communicate distress immediately.
- Assist with Search & Rescue nationwide.
- To respond to others in distress.
- To get regular weather updates.
- To maintain a communication in safe and secure manner while out at sea
Competence: Transmit and receive information using GMDSS subsystems and equipment and fulfilling the functional requirements of GMDSS Sea Area A1 and provide radio services in emergencies.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be not less than 18 years of age, be fluent in the English language and have knowledge of the phonetic alphabet. Candidates ideally should be computer keyboard literate.
