Navigation Aids and Equipment Simulator Training

Description:

(Regulation II/1 and II/2 of the STCW Convention, as amended (Manila Amendments) and Table A-II/1 and A-II/2 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended)

Aim

The aim of the training at this level is to equip the candidate with the fundamental knowledge and skills to keep a safe navigational watch and to use radar, automatic radar plotting aids (ARPA) and other navigational aids to maintain safety of navigation

It is intended for candidates for certificates of competency as officer in charge of a navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more, in accordance with Regulation II/1 and II/2 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments). The Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:

Function: Navigation at the operational level

Competence: Maintain a safe navigational watch Use of radar and ARPA to maintain safety of navigation Use of ECDIS to maintain safety of navigation Maintain the safety of navigation through the use of ECDIS and associated navigation systems to assist command decision making Use the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases Manoeuvre the ship

Entry requirements

1. Candidates must have successfully completed the academic studies for the Diploma in Maritime Operations – Navigation (UTT) or equivalent acceptable to the MCA.

2. Candidates must have undergone at least 6 months sea service which must include supervised bridge watchkeeping duties and/or similar training appropriate towards the award of a certificate of competency as an officer in charge of a navigational watch, in accordance with Regulation II/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments).

To obtain a full NAEST STCW 2010 (Operational level) certificate the following courses must be completed:

  • MARD2004 Electronic Navigation Systems: Theory (20 DAYS/4 WEEKS) (Included in the Diploma in Maritime Operations – Navigation)
  • RADAR AND ARPA SIMULATOR TRAINING COURSE (10 DAYS/2 WEEKS)
  • TRAINING FOR THE OPERATIONAL USE OF ELCTRONIC CHART DISPLAY AND INFROMATION SYSTEMS (ECDIS) (5 DAYS/1 WEEK)
  • BRIDGE WATCHKEEPING PREPARATORY COURSE (5 DAYS/1 WEEK)
