Certificate/Proficiency in Basic Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations

* ‘Certificate’ applies to candidates not in possession of an MCA approved TANKER FIRE FIGHTING COURSE certificate prior to commencing this course.

‘Proficiency’ applies to candidates in possession of an MCA approved TANKER FIRE FIGHTING COURSE certificate prior to commencing this course.

Aim

The aim of this support and operational level training course is to prepare the trainee deck officer/rating with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to fulfil the role as a tanker hand on board oil and chemical tankers. At the end of the course the candidate will have the specialised technical knowledge to serve on oil and chemical tankers and be assigned specific duties and responsibilities related to cargo or cargo equipment. He / She will be able to safely support and operate under Management Level Staff guidance.

The mandatory requirements for the training of masters, officers and ratings on tankers are set out in the following:

Function: Basic oil and chemical tanker cargo operations (ratings and trainees)

Competence: Contribute to the safe cargo operation of oil and chemical tankers; Take precautions to prevent hazards; Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures; *Carry out fire fighting operations; Respond to emergencies; Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment from the release of oil or chemicals

Entry requirements

Candidates must have successfully completed the basic training required by STCW Code A-VI/1 and have been issued with an MCA ‘PROFICIENCY IN BASIC SAFETY’ certificate or an alternative certificate acceptable to the MCA.
