The Institute for Criminology & Public Safety (ICPS) of The University of Trinidad & Tobago is dedicated to international cooperation and exchange. We encourage applications of visiting fellows whose research interests and activities are in fields of criminology, public safety, psychology/sociology and crime and crime in the Caribbean.
Admission criteria
We welcome applications of visiting fellows by PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and academic staff (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, or Lecturers) with a strong research and teaching agenda (depending on their level). Preference will be given to those whose research interests are compatible with our staff’s research areas.
The Institute is not in a position to offer financial assistance to visiting scholars. The visitor has full responsibility for their funding during their stay in Trinidad & Tobago.
Visitors must be proficient in spoken and written English. If English is not their first language, visitors are requested to provide proof of their proficiency.
Application Procedure
Applications will be considered around the year from one month to one year.
Applications for visiting fellow status should be addressed to the Institute’s Programme Leader, Professor Kevin Haines (kevin.haines@utt.edu.tt) and must include the following:
- A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications;
- A motivation/cover letter containing the planned dates of the visit and motivation for applying to the Institute;
- A research proposal or work programme (no longer than 3 pages), comprised of a short description of activities and goals to be pursued during the stay at the Institute.
- A reference letter from your home institution, endorsing your visit.
What we offer
Amongst the benefits of being a visiting fellow at the Institute are:
- Use of the library facilities of UTT Valsayn Campus;
- Office space at the Institute whenever possible, depending on availability;
- Participation in seminars and/or other activities organised by the Institute; and
- Collaboration with the members of the Institute.
If necessary, the International Office will contact accepted visiting fellows for assistance with immigration procedures and insurance.
The visiting scholar is responsible for finding accommodation in Trinidad.
Expectations
Visiting fellows are expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of the Institute. Depending on the length and nature of their visit, the Institute expects visiting fellows to give at least one seminar whilst in residence to present research, or to contribute to teaching graduate students. Other possible ways to contribute to academic life would be by organising a reciprocal visit to their own institution by members of the Institute. We expect that the fellowship programme will result in a mutually beneficial relationship between visitors and faculty, a relationship which ideally extends beyond the tenure of the fellowship itself. Visitors who stay for more than three months are expected to publish at least one publication, ideally in conjunction with current staff members.
