Introduction
Law, policy and sustainability provide the core of this group’s research activity. Policy are governmental statements of intent, while law sets out the legal and institutional framework to make policy binding and help government achieve its aims. The work of this group explores existing legal and institutional frameworks in various areas including manufacturing; environment; renewable and alternative energy; education; entrepreneurship/business; and equality, diversity and inclusion and makes recommendations for improvements to the frameworks. Research is also conducted to suggest areas that may benefit from the creation of relevant legal and institutional frameworks in emerging areas of interest, such as renewable and alternative energy.
In the area of sustainability, research is centred on sustainable manufacturing; environmental sustainability; and lean manufacturing. Much of the research is geared towards improving operational efficiencies and, consequently, profit margins through company-specific case studies. The inclusion of cost-benefit analyses have proven quite useful to management in their decision-making process.
While the work of this group largely focuses on the softer sciences, the research conducted is interdisciplinary and collaborative in nature. All research is carried out in relation to Trinidad and Tobago. Comparative analyses are also often carried out with respect to the countries of the wider English-speaking Caribbean. The group is open to any other related areas of research, once their central focus is law, policy or sustainability.
