Andrew LewisFormer UTT student athlete, Andrew Lewis has created history by becoming the first sailor from Trinidad and Tobago to qualify for the Olympics in the Laser class. At age 18, Andrew came agonisingly close to qualifying for the 2008 Games in Beijing, but missed his target by two spots in his final regatta. Following this setback, Andrew decided to resume training immediately to push towards London 2012.

In 2009, he enrolled in the High Performance Program at the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT).  The Academy of Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Trinidad and Tobago assisted Andrew in his pursuit for Academic and Olympic glory. The Academy offered Andrew an Academic program in Sport Studies while also facilitated his training time and equipment which included a state of the art Laser "boat" which Andrew used in all competitions locally and internationally. An agreement between UTT and Solent University in Southampton allowed Andrew to fly to Solent for training at a tertiary institution with a high quality sailing program.

During his time at Solent Andrew was noticed by the organisers of the Emerging Nations Program (ENP) and was offered a scholarship to attend. The ENP was a commitment by the bid committee and the Perth government to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) for hosting the World Championships in 2011. It was geared towards helping in the development of sailors who showed great potential but were from countries less known for sailing. After attending the inaugural camp in July 2009, Andrew was subsequently invited to all seven of the camps. The organisers and coaches recognised his talent and admired his keen drive to improve his skills and attain his goals.

Later that year he also missed qualifying for one of the 36 spots for the Olympics at the ISAF World Championships. Andrew then set his sights on the Audi Laser World Championships in Baltenhagen, Germany in May 2012.

With only one sailor per country being eligible to represent their nation, Andrew was one of 29 athletes competing for one of12 spots from that regatta, to qualify for the London Olympics. He worked down to the very last day of qualification, and again almost missing the opportunity for the Olympics. However, he was successful in the end and realised a childhood dream to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Olympics. Now 22 years old, Andrew Lewis is one of the youngest competitors in the fleet of 48 which augers well for his chances in future Olympic Games.

Andrew is a firm believer in giving back to the community. While he is in Trinidad, Andrew works with the Vessigny Vikings Sailing School on the Southern end of the island,, teaching young persons from the Vessigny Beach community the basics techniques of sailing. He was also responsible for coordinating a "Learn to Swim" program which taught over 100 young children from the area how to swim. He enjoys working with children and is always willing to serve as a mentor. During his quieter moments, Andrew enjoys cycling, water sports and spending quality time with family and friends.
